Have you seen those Direct Buy commercials? Maybe been to their website? With buying a new house and getting married and all the hoopla we’re doing, we (naively) signed up for an “orientation” to figure out what the company was all about. From their website, all we knew was you had to pay to be a member (we likened it to Sam’s Club), and once you went to the orientation and declined membership, you could not come back in your lifetime to sign up. That’s all we knew going in.

When we arrived, we filled out a survey and were grouped with an older couple from Lafayette and led into a salesman’s private office. The only other couple there had a salesman all to themselves. The salesman (I don’t even remember his name) led us through a typical sales pitch, showing us the things they offered, asking us how much we thought different items were marked up and shocking us with how much retailers actually paid for them. He asked how much we thought we spent in a year on “stuff” and used some faulty logic to determine how much that would mean we spent in five years. Then he told us how much a membership was to be in their club.

The first three years will cost you a one time fee of only $5222.00. Yes. FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. But wait! After that first fee, the renewal fee is only $98 a year up to year 10 of your club membership. (They can’t predict what the renewal fee will be after year 10 because it changes with the national income level, etc. Also, apparently these fees vary by region.)

All that was fine, and I think it honestly is a good value for people in a variety of stages in their lives. But not us. We just bought a house and are trying to rent out our condo, so we really won’t know what our monthly budget is until we get settled in the new place. We politely told the man this and what do you think he did? He pushed us harder to commit to joining. He showed us different payment plans (at- I’m sure- extreme interest rates), you can put some down and have a higher payment, etc., etc. We were finally able to convince him we were not joining by getting up from the table and he turned into a COMPLETE ASSHOLE. I mean, it was 24 hours ago and if I saw him right now I’d spit in his face.

If you google “direct buy scam” one of the first things that come up is the answer to a Yahoo question from someone who works for Direct Buy himself. He pretty much says what I said, if you make enough money and have a lot of things to buy (and the cash to put down for your initial fee), it’s probably worth it. But if not, STEER CLEAR.

And to top it off, we missed the Saints game for the stupid orientation!

Here is a run down of my day, so far:

Got a problem? Make it Erin’s problem!! Why not? Her boss is MIA half the time, and the person you really need to talk to has the day off.
Got a phone call from someone interested in leasing the condo! That was a huge relief, because trying to sell the place would have been a nightmare, but two mortgage payments was looming. Hopefully this dude and his girlfriend enjoy decor that includes pup teeth marks.

Making pizza on the Pizza Pizzazz for dinner tonight! It’s a completely underrated kitchen appliance.
